Dermot had spent his entire youth being a victim to other people’s vices.

Not anymore. Now he always got what he wanted. He made sure of it. In business and in pleasure. Sometimes he just had to work harder at it.

This was one of those times.

Leg tapping on the wood floors, he sat in the leather seat in his office at the Tullaghan house, like the lord of the manor. He listened to the meeting on the other end of the line impatiently, glancing at the time. Eleven at night in Ireland, three in the afternoon in California, and the meeting didn’t feel like it was going to wrap up anytime soon. The idiots from the company he’d acquired in San Francisco hadn’t realized yet that he’d bought the right to have exactly what he wanted from them. Because, there, he was also the lord and master.

But they’d realize it by the end of the call, unless they wanted to look for new positions.

They’d been confused when he’d informed them that he’d patch into the meeting via phone from Tullaghan. Dermot knew it wasn’t like him. He was known for being hands on and present. Even his assistant couldn’t hold back expressing surprise that he’d decided to stay in Tullaghan for the time being.

When he’d left, he’d vowed to only return when his mother died to bury her. He’d wanted to make sure she was dead and gone.

When he’d bought this house, it’d been in part to erase what he’d been as a child, to show the man he’d become.

Who’d have imagined that he’d be eager to stay there?

There were two reasons: Abigail and Madelynne.

They both called to him in different ways, but he was surprised to find himself drawn more to Madelynne. Not in the way he imagined a siren’s call was: alluring and tempting, drawing him closer to ruin. No, Madelynne’s soul was pure and good—like an angel with a secret blessing that was all for him.

He’d looked her up. She’d been a premier dancer in New York, with accolades all over the world. He’d watched clip after clip of her on stage. To call her performances breathtaking was an understatement.

She herself was more than breathtaking. He’d never seen a more beautiful woman, and he’d seen plenty. He bet that her pictures online didn’t do her justice. She had a breadth of passion about her that a camera wouldn’t be able to capture fully.

He’d also read that she’d had an accident six months ago. He’d heard about the American woman in a wheelchair. He knew that had to be her.

That might have caused some men to pause, but Dermot didn’t see how a wheelchair made any difference. Fiona would have been in a wheelchair too. That didn’t change who the person was within, or how that beauty was projected without. Certainly not a woman like Madelynne Broussard.

Just like that, the soul craving began to beat at him. His heart sped up, and heat suffused his body. Sweat beaded on his upper lip.
